What is a Neuropathology Fellowship?

The Neuropathology Fellowship is a 2-year ACGME accredited program. The clinical aspect of neuropathology training encompasses tissue-based diagnosis of diseases of the central and peripheral nervous systems, skeletal muscle, and eye. Additional skills that may be acquired include integration and interpretation of electron microscopy, and molecular pathology relevant to the practice of neuropathology. In addition to clinical education, many fellowship programs advance fellows’ skills as physician-scientists.

Requirements for Applicants

Applicants must have certification or eligibility for certification by the ABPath or American Osteopathic Board of Pathology in anatomic pathology and clinical pathology or in anatomic pathology; or in neurology or neurological surgery by a member board of the American Board of Medical Specialties (ABMS) or a certifying board of the American Osteopathic Association.

Applicants may also apply for a combined training program in Anatomic Pathology/Neuropathology (AP/NP). Pathways to neuropathology fellowship include: 3 years of AP only, 4 years of AP/CP, and combined training AP/NP. The later goes though the residency match (Link to the match website https://www.nrmp.org/calendar/medical-schools/). Some of the above programs have this option, contact each program you are interested in as this may vary by year and by institution.

ACGME Patient Care and Procedural Skills Competency Requirements

Minimal requirements to apply for Board certification at the end of the fellowship program includes at least 150 brain necropsies, 300 neurosurgical specimens, 50 intraoperative neurosurgical consultations, demonstrate competency in diseases of muscle, peripheral nerve and the eye.
